A very happy Friday to you all. Make sure to check out our weekly “Food For Thought” quotes that we share on our social media accounts! Today’s is going to be an excellent one.
We’ll briefly talk about the power of words, specifically words that are written down (or typed and printed). Our communication has changed drastically over the last 15 years, as texting, internet messaging services, video chat, work from home, and even AI has influenced how we communicate with each other. But at the end of the day, communicating is communicating, and communication is driven by words and non-verbal queues.
For this blog, we’ll look at the power of words, specifically the written kind. One could talk endlessly about the power of the spoken word, especially as it is reflected by action. That is out of scope for this piece!
- Words are a tool for remembering – W love to-do lists, sticky notes, scribbles on scraps of paper, and even fully numerically sequenced and ordered grocery lists. Words are a tool of remembrance, making life a little bit easier, and of also being an artifact for something to be done. For us, the words we put together in The Adventures of Maximus Rex are a way to remember Max, and to pave his own journey. It’s a delightful way to embrace the time we had with him while setting off on a course to unexplored lands.
- Words help chart the past – Pictures are a wonderful way to remember get togethers, reunions, fun birthday parties, and major life events. But it is the words around those photos that provide the narrative and a deeper level of connection. If an author can paint a clear picture with words and descriptions, it’s possible to be sucked into that experience (or their world that they are creating). How often have you read a chapter of The Lord of the Rings only to press on because you absolutely had to know what destiny awaited the Hobbits? It is easy to forget things in the past, but when written, it can instantly transport you back to that moment.
- Words create direction and hope for the future – Planning, scheduling, and arranging are all a normal part of organization, but when you write goals, tasks, and activities down, it provides a reminder and a kind of direction for where your path may lead. Athletes write down their goals and post them in public places as a conscious (and subconscious) reminders for what they want to achieve. For us, we have goals for the book series, manuscripts, brainstorming ideas, and story concepts scattered all around the house, and a whiteboard of our successes, lessons learned, and things to do where it is very visible. This keeps us (relatively) on track and provides a great way of organizing! There is an optimism and set of guides that are present when looking at the written ideas and direction we want to head.
Short and sweet for today. Be mindful of your words (and how you use them)! They are powerful tools indeed…
